A little bit about the regatta...
Egham Regatta is run on the River Thames from the Wraysbury Skiff and Punting Club and the historic Runnymede Pleasure Grounds on the outskirts of Egham. As far as records show, the first Egham Regatta was held in 1909 and there are references to it in the ‘Lock-to-Lock Times’ of 1910, 1911, 1912 and 1913, but it was ceased in 1914 due to the hostilities of World War I. In 1913, the Regatta was affiliated to the Skiff Racing Association.
The first mention of the Regatta in the British Rowing Almanac occurs in 1924. All these early regattas were for races in Skiffs, Punts and Rum-Tums. Some time after 1927 the Regatta seems to have ceased again and 'recent' entries in the British Rowing Almanac re-commenced in 1955, by which time it was purely a rowing regatta. In 1978 Skiffing and punting was re-introduced and the Regatta was re-affiliated to the Skiff Racing Association. There has been skiff and punt racing at the Regatta since this date. Egham Regatta is the only regatta in the country that still provides racing for Rowing, Skiffing and Punting.
Egham Regatta has always catered for all levels and ages of competitor, from the relative newcomer upwards. Above all, it is a 'friendly' Regatta and runs in a relaxed and relatively informal manner. This has been emphasised in recent years by a race programme designed to attract juniors in the J12 - J16 age groups.
Egham Regatta offers a short sprint course of some 650 meters upstream from a stake boat start. Events for juniors are for sculling in singles, doubles or coxed quads. The Regatta offers a family atmosphere, with an excellent view of the course and the finish from the towpath, which runs the length of the course. There is also ample parking space for spectators and boat trailers on the Runnymede Pleasure Grounds.
